John Rimarcik succumbed to brain cancer on Monday at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy that transformed Minneapolis’s North Loop and St. Anthony Main areas.
A Visionary’s Journey from Student to Icon
John Rimarcik’s journey began as a student at DeLaSalle High School in the 1950s. Witnessing the dilapidation of the North Loop area during his walks home ignited a spark of vision in him. In a 2016 interview with the Business Journal, Rimarcik recalled, “It was nothing. Vacant, windowless buildings.” Little did he know that these very buildings would become the canvas for his impactful legacy.
Transforming the North Loop and St. Anthony Main
Taking the reins of those once-desolate buildings, Rimarcik invested in and revitalized the North Loop and St. Anthony Main areas. His efforts triggered a renaissance that reshaped the landscape into the thriving neighborhoods we know today. Specifically, his impact on the restaurant scenes of these areas is immeasurable.
Culinary Empire and Historic Properties

The Monte Carlo, acquired in the early 1980s, was just one gem in his culinary crown. Other notable establishments under his ownership included Runyon’s, Edwards, Cobble, D.NOLO, Public Domain, North Loop Wine & Spirits, and more. His eclectic portfolio also featured Annie’s Parlour, Convention Grill in Edina, Pracna, St. Anthony Main Theatre, and the Kitty Cat Klub.
